  • Dr. Abdul Kouanda is a gastroenterologist who specializes in caring for patients with cancerous and noncancerous diseases of the liver, bile ducts, gallbladder and pancreas. To assess and treat these conditions, he specializes in performing endoscopic procedures, including endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, which uses both endoscopy and X-rays to treat bile and pancreatic duct disorders; endoscopic ultrasound, in which an endoscope is used to pass the ultrasound transducer into the digestive tract; and endoscopic mucosal resection, a minimally invasive way to remove growths from the digestive tract lining. He works with a team of gastroenterologists, surgeons, oncologists and radiologists to provide comprehensive care.

Kouanda's research interests include patient outcomes, safety, and novel therapeutic approaches in endoscopy. He is also interested in endoscopic treatments for weight loss and gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

Kouanda earned his medical degree from the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University. At UCSF, he completed a residency in internal medicine and fellowships in gastroenterology and interventional endoscopy. He belongs to several professional associations, including the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
